Conceptual and Interactive Pieces

OVERLOAD

An interactive piece using hot spots and motion sensors in an emulated cityscape to show how much we are bombarded with information each day and in order to pay attention to any of it we must focus on select parts. Five hot spots were created and when activated played soundscapes that signified major parts of everyday life. The hot spots overlapped and as you went further into the cityscape all five hotspots would activate making it impossible to distinguish anything. A cell phone signified family and friends by playing voice mail messages. A house signified your life at home, playing sounds from childhood recordings. A second house played audio from instant message conversations that were converted to speech. Finally a T.V. signified media, playing audio clips from channel surfing.

A.L.I.C.E. to A.L.I.C.E.

Had an early a.i. bot named A.L.I.C.E. talk to itself by copying and pasting its responses to a second version of itself in a new browser window. The A.I.'s eventually ended up contemplating the existence of God and flirting with each other before getting stuck in a loop. I then converted this text to speech and using Max/MSP/Jitter replayed the conversation through two Teddy Ruxpins. To do this I had to copy the computer program on the right side of the stereo tapes The Ruxpins would play and in an audio editing program phonetically cut out bits to use for the new speech.
